This paper aims to contemplate and compare the two theories that constitute a core component in the development of the Translation Studies: the Skopos theory and the Interpretive theory. These two theories, which were advocated and developed mainly by professional translators and interpreters, place emphasis on the target texts or the target language. Another common ground they share is that they are considered by many as the ‘General Theories’, which are to explicate varied aspects of both interpretation and translation. This paper intends to gain insights into the similarities and differences between these two important theories. It consists of two parts. The first part explores how the working experiences of professional interpreters and translators were formulated into the significant theories. The second part compares the premises behind these two theories and reflects on how the Interpretive Theory which started as a theory of interpretation and the Skopos Theory as a theory of translation have evolved into the ‘General Theories.’
