In line with the rapid expansion of globalization, the tourism industry worldwide is expected to establish itself as one of the major growth industries in the future. This dictates the nurturing of tourism-related personnel equipped with language proficiency and understanding of tourism in general. Based on this understanding, this study examines the curriculum of tourism-related English (interpretation) departments in three different universities in Korea. By doing so, this paper aims to show a wide range of differences that exist in the composition of the curriculum in these universities, especially in the ratio among classes related to tourism, general English, tourism English, and interpretation. This study further suggests that much the same way as how background knowledge regarding a given subject is an inherent part in the study of interpretation, general understanding of tourism-related subjects should constitute an integral component in tourism English education. This study also places tourism English interpretation in the bigger context of community interpretation, in which interpretation and its education is understood as different in many aspects from conference interpretation. This article discusses tourism interpretation as effective story-telling skills, based on factual information with emphasis placed on forming solidarity with tourists.
