Caesalpinia sappan (C. sappan) is known to be one of multiple natural colorants. In this study, change of physical properties and observation of morphology in C. sappan colored hair were investigated before and after shampooing. Virgin hair was collected and divided into six hair shafts (normal hair: Nh; bleached hair: Bh; C. sappan acid treated hair: Cs-Ⅰ; C. sappan alkali treated hair: Cs-II; Oxidizing colorant treated hair: Och; and Henna colored hair: Hch). Lightness, thickness, tensile strength of hair shaft, and thickness of cuticles were measured and observed over the course of 60 shampoos. As a result, visual observation of coloring changes before shampooing included the following: Cs-Ⅰwas brown, Cs-Ⅱ and Och were dark-madder lake, and Hch was dark-brown. After 60 shampoos, the color of hair shafts lightened slightly. Regarding the lightness of the Nh, Cs-Ⅰ, Cs-Ⅱ, Och, and Hch became gradually higher, while on the other hand, Bh darkened. The redness of the Nh, Cs-Ⅰ, Cs-Ⅱ, Och, and Hch became gradually lower, while Bh was higher. The yellowness of the Nh, Cs-Ⅱ, and Och were higher, while with the Bh, Cs-Ⅰ, and Hch were lower. And hair thickness decreased in the following order: Och, Cs-Ⅱ, Bh, Hch, Cs-I, and Nh. Tensile strength decreased in the following order: Cs-Ⅱ, Bh, Hch, Och, Cs-I, and Nh. After 60 shampoos, cuticle thickness decreased in the following order: Och, Bh, Cs-I, Hch, Cs-Ⅱ, and Nh. In conclusion, Cs-I and II have better stainability and thickness, tensile strength, and had less cuticle damage than Och. C. sappan colored hair shafts can utilize a natural hair colorant such as henna.
