This study was conducted to assess the effect of massages on relieving stress among career women by measuring the change of the heart rate variation (HRV), VAS and POMS pre- and post- massage treatment and to prepare fundamental data on stress and back massage treatment. By use of a structured self-administered questionnaire from the period of Jan. 4th to Apr. 18th, 2010, this study measured the HRV in pre- and post- back massage patients and surveyed the general characteristics, the POMS, and VAS in 57 women between the ages of 20 and 40 years old who were office workers, specialists or who work in service industries and visited a skin care shop in Busan. The author provided a 40-minute Swedish massage program to the subjects. The collected data were analysed using the statistical package for the SPSS (ver. 18.0) program. Results were as follows: The level of the VAS measurement, which was a subjective stress measurement scale, was significantly decreased in post- as compared to pre- back massage levels by general characteristics, and were even more decreased in women in their 40s and in office workers(p<0.01). The result of the POMS measurement, an emotional status scale, also showed a significant difference in pre- and post- back massage levels by age, and were more greatly decreased in women in their 30s and specialists(p<0.01). The result of the HRV measurement, an objective measurement scale, showed a significant decrease in the average heart rate of those in their 30s and service industry employees(p<0.05) and the level of HF was also significantly increased in those in their 30s(p<0.05).
