Background & Objectives : Previous studies have shown that the ipsilateral hand function may not be normal in stroke patients. The aims of this study were 1) to estimate the distribution patterns of the ipsilateral hand function in subjects with stroke, 2) to assess the ipsilateral hand function according to the patients’age, and etiology and location of stroke. Method : The Jebsen hand function test(JHFT) was measured within 33.2±19.1 days after the onset of stroke in 167 patients. Patients with a bilateral lesion, subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH), brain tumor, and arteriovenous malformation(AVM) were excluded. R e s u l t s : Most patients had a mild sluggishness of the JHFT. The older age group (≥60) was slower than the younger group (<60) in writing and heavy cans, and hemorrhagic patients were slower than infarction patients in the checkers and heavy cans of the JHFT. However, the location of stroke did not influence the subtests of the JHFT on the ipsilateral side. Conclusions : Impairment of ipsilateral hand function is common after stroke. Old(≥60) age and the nature of stroke are factors related to impaired ipsilateral hand function.
