Background: Infection, inflammation and autoimmunity have been associated with pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Nucleated cells express Heat Shock Protein (HSP), evolutionary highly conserved molecules, in response to environmental stress with inflammation. For carotid atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, an association with an increase in anti-HSP 65 antibodies has been demonstrated. But data regarding HSP in ischemic stroke are yet sparse. The aim of our study was to investigate whether ischemic stroke is associated with a humoral immune response to HSP. Methods: This case-control study includes a complete profile of anti-HSP 60/70 antibody and HSP 60/70 proteins in acute ischemic stroke patients. Eighty-eight patients with acute ischemic stroke and 90 controls were evaluated for conventional risk factor, and levels of HSP protein and antibodies. The levels of IgG antibody to HSP 60/70 and circulating HSP 60/ 70 proteins were measured by emzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Ischemic stroke was connected with a significant elevation of anti-HSP60 and 70 antibodies levels and HSP 70 protein compared with controls (p<0.001). The multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that increased levels of anti-HSP 60 and 70 IgG antibodies were independent markers for stroke. Conclusions: Our study suggest that expression of HSP may be a marker in the development of atherosclerosis, if atherosclerosis is considered as an immune disease.
