This study aims to present an ideal daughter in The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare deals with many daughters from his early play Two Gentlemen of Verona, to his late play The Tempest. Through the plays, his daughters show a lot of various characters. In The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare presents two daughters, Portia and Jessica, who show opposite characters. Portia who has inherited her father’s property follows his will to choose her husband by three caskets. Although she feels helpless because of her father’s will, she follows it. Jessica, however, rejects her father’s words because she doesn’t like her father’s lifestyle and his Jewish origin. So she runs away from home with a lot of his money and property. Like this, these two daughters behave differently. Portia accepts her father’s rule but Jessica does not. Through the courtroom scene in Venice, Portia solves men’s problems by her wit and knowledge, and rescues Antonio from Shylock. And by using her marriage ring, she tests Bassanio’s love and educates him for their better marital life. Through this process, she turns from a submissive and passive woman into an active and positive one. Finally, she is equal to Bassanio, not subordinate to him. At first Jessica violates her father’s words, and marries a Christian to get rid of her Jewish origin. Through her marriage with Lorenzo, she becomes a Christian as she wants, but she is completely subordinate to him and needs to be educated by him. In Act 5, the couple’s conversation shows Jessica worries about Bassanio’s love and their future marital life. In this play, there are two different daughters. Portia follows her father’s will but tries to improve her situations with her wit and knowledge, and finally she is equal to her husband, Bassanio. On the other hand, Jessica violates her father’s words, but finally she is subordinate to her husband, Lorenzo. Through the two daughters, Shakespeare presents Portia as an ideal daughter who respects patriarchy and improves her situations by her wisdom and knowledge little by little, not radically. At last she is equal to her husband, not dominated by him.
