In A Tale of A Tub, Jonathan Swift presents hypocritical Christians for their abuses of religious authority while affirming the unassailableness of the Gospel itself. Swift observes doctrinal corruption and hypocritical behavior within all major branches of the church. Employing the device of literary satire, Swift condemns Christian leaders who value fame and authority over the principles of faith. This paper examines how Swift exposes the abuses of religion to help his readers gain an enlightened understanding of true meaning and role of Christian teachings. And this paper also looks at the way how Swift envisions a society dedicated to the common good of the human race as well as the virtues of modesty and rationalism.
