The purpose of this study is to understand the lives of two mothers each having a high-school-child with a hearing impairment and to narrate their experiences from the perspective of life-span development. As a research method, in-depth interviews for the mothers were conducted and data were analyzed according to a qualitative analysis procedure.
The followings were identified as the results of the study: (1) The mother's acceptance of and positive adjustment to the child's disability were changed by the perceived potentials of the child; (2) the supports for the mother from the family members had different effects on the relationship between her and her child; (3) the mother's acceptance of her child's dream and hope varied with her trust for the ability of child and professionals who support her. The implications of the results and research limitations were discussed.
