이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 4학년 학생들이 <지층과 화석> 단원과 관련된 현장체험학습을 경험했을 때 어떠한 교육적 효과가 있는지 알아보기 위한것이다. 이를 위해 <지층과 화석> 단원의 현장체험학습을 위한 교수 － 학습 지도안을 작성하였고, 대구광역시에 소재한 N초등학교 4학년 학생 6명과직접 현장체험학습을 실시하였다. 자기 보고서와 면담 문항을 개발하여 자기 보고서 작성과 면담 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 학생들은 현장체험학습을 통하여 지층과 화석을 발견하는 것에 대한 기쁨을 느꼈다. 둘째, 과학에 대한 자신감이 증가하였다. 셋째, 시험 문제 해결에서의 실질적인도움을 받을 수 있었다. 넷째, 교사 및 학생들 간의 인간적인 관계가 더 돈독해지는 계기를 제공한다고 생각하였다. 다섯째, 현장체험학습을 하는 동안걷기에 대한 부담감을 느꼈고 화석을 발견하지 못할 때 서운함을 느꼈다.
