This article is the study of The New Qing History Project, which The People’s Republic of China embarked on in 2002 and is expected to release in 2012. The New Qing History Project got attention for being the biggest Humanitarian and Social Science Project since the launching ofthe PRC in 1949.
The biggest reason why PRC. launched The New Qing History Project in 2002 is because the Draft History of Oing (淸史橋) has been criticized for having many flaws. There were criticisms that the Draft History of Qing overrated Qing dynasty and Manchu tribe while underrating revolutionary activities and the founding of Republic of China, and that it was based on poorly organized documents. Besides, it exposed the Issue of Incoherency in perspective. The Kuomintang of China (KMT)’s strong push for revision and new compilation did not yield a fruitful result.
The Communist Party of China(CPC)’s similar effort related to the Draft History of Qing was of little avail. The New Oing History Project is the end result of this earlier trial and error. Since 2002, the Preparatory Committee of The New Qing History Project ruled on organization, composition，writing style of New Qing History and coIlected scattered materials related with this project from China, Japan, Europe and so on. And many colIected sources, archives, historical records, primary writing by foreigners, and illustrative sources are published through diverse kinds of series books.
It is true that there were great strides at collecting and announcing the material about the research of Qing History. However, since the state's power and capital have been immensely poured into this project, it is highly likely that covert alliances between the state and scholars affected the interpretation of the historical materials. 10years into the business, the result of The New Qing History Project has not arrived. The reason that this official announcement is delayed even with the enormous collecting of scripts may be that it is not easy to organize the incredible volume of material collected. Unfortunately, it will take much more time to finish its final editing.
