Background/Aims: There is an increased risk for inflammatorybowel disease (IBD) patients to develop infectionsdue to the use of immunomodulators and biologics. Severalinfections are preventable by immunizations. This studyinvestigated the knowledge and awareness of Korean gastroenterologistsregarding the vaccination of patients with IBD. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was sent by e-mail tothe faculty members of tertiary hospitals. Gastroenterologistswere asked ten questions regarding the immunization of patientswith IBD. A total of 56 gastroenterologists completedthe questionnaire. Results: A majority of gastroenterologists(>60%) had rarely or never recorded an immunization historyfrom their patients with IBD. Moreover, 50% to 70% of thegastroenterologists did not know that live vaccines shouldbe avoided in immunosuppressed patients. The most commonlymentioned resistance to vaccinations was “the lack ofconcern and knowledge regarding vaccination.” Gastroenterologistsmore frequently asked about the immunization historyof influenza, pneumococcal, hepatitis A, and hepatitis Bvaccines and recommended these vaccines more often thanothers. Conclusions: Korean gastroenterologists’ awarenessand knowledge regarding the vaccination of patients withIBD were very poor. Intensive educational programs on immunizationguidelines directed toward gastroenterologistswho care for patients with IBD are required to ensure thatthese patients receive the necessary vaccinations.
