This study conducted to determine the effects of lavender oil (LO) on hair growth-relevant enzyme activity and cytokine expression in C57BL/6 mice. At week 4, the activities of γ-GT in the PC, E1, and E2 groups were 25%, 11%, and 15% significantly (p<0.05) higher than the N group, respectively. The expression of growth factors including KGF, IGF-1, HGF, and VEGF increased as time passed. At week 4, compared to the N group, KGF mRNA expression significantly (p<0.05) increased by 15%, 10%, and 10% in the PC, E1, and E2 groups, respectively. Those of IGF-1 mRNA expression significantly (p<0.05) increased by 29%, 21%, and 21%, respectively.
Those of HGF mRNA expression significantly (p<0.05) increased by 36%, 14%, and 18%, respectively. Those of VEGF mRNA expression significantly (p<0.05) increased 47%, 24%, and 24%, respectively. The correlation coefficient between hair growth area and KGF mRNA expression was 0.940. Putting the results together, we found that LO has hair growth-promoting effects as identified by hair growth-relevant enzyme activity and cytokine expression in C57BL/6 mice.
