This study was conducted to evaluate the skin whitening effects of Aceriphyllum rossii leaf ethanol extract (ARLEE) by measuring melanin synthesis, tyrosinase activity, and tyrosinase mRNA and protein expression in melan-a cells. ARLEE effectively reduced melanin synthesis by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and its mRNA and protein expression, even superior to that for arbutin. Therefore, it is suggested that the hypopigmentation activity of ARLEE could be via its inhibition of tyrosinase at the transcriptional level. ARLEE could be a potential functional cosmetic material for the skin whitening. On the other hand, a moderate cytotoxicity of ARLEE to melan-a cells needs to be studied on its safe practical application to functional cosmetic material.
