In order to evaluate the lipid improvement and anti-obesity effect of Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau ethanol extract (CTEE) in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice, hematological and biochemical experiments were conducted.
Experimental animals, six-week-old C57BL/6 male mice, were classified into five groups: normal group (N), control group (C), positive control group (PC, 0.5% catechin), experimental group 1 (E1, 2% Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau stem ethanol extract, CTSEE) and experimental group 2 (E2, 2% Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau leaves ethanol extract, CTLEE). The thirty-five mice, seven in each group, were used. After inducing obesity by providing HFD for four weeks, CTSEE and CTLEE mixed with water were provided for five weeks, ad libitum. Water and feed intake for C, PC, E1 and E2 groups were significantly decreased (p<0.05), compared to N group. Daily body weight gain and feed efficiency significantly decreased (p<0.05) in E1 group, compared to C group. In the hematological analysis, PC, E1 and E2 groups showed significant decrease (p<0.05) in white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes and red blood cells, compared to C group.
In the serum biochemical analysis, AST, ALT, ALP, LDL-C, LDH, insulin, glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels were significantly decreased (p<0.05) and HDL-C levels were significantly increased (p<0.05) in PC, E1 and E2groups, compared to C group. Especially, E1 group showed the greatest improvement in the above overall parameters, showing its favorable effectiveness in lipid improvement and anti-obesity.
