The color red has been used in make-up since ancient people started to adorn themselves with natural sources. In fact,through its intensity, red is a form of non-verbal communication. This study aims to analyze the chromatic properties and the social images of the color red. In order to research these characteristics, this study focuses on four representative Korean films released from 2000 to 2010, in which this color was used to imply a dramatic switch of the movie plot: A Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Housemaid, Hwang Jeanne, and Untold Scandal. The results of analyzing the social images of red in these movies are divided into 3 different characteristics. First, it represents danger including revenge, anger, and horror. Second, red symbolizes the confidence of the heroine including enthusiasm, activity and dignity. The third it creates an erotic image which includes a sexy, attractive figure of the heroine. and Finally, it has tragic image. Make-up plays a very important role in movies as well as in actor performance. The four movies in this study display its critical role in terms of foreshadowing.
