Gardniae fructus (Gf) is known as one of natural colorants and has various effects in asian medicine. In this study, the changes of chromaticity, hair thickness and tensile strength were observed to screen the hair coloring effect and the photo stability of coloring the hair with Gf in condition of acid and alkaline, and UV-C radiation for 72 hours. Immediately after dyeing, whereas oxidized colorants hair was the color of red and henna dyeing hair was the color of orange, Gf dyeing hair was the color of bright yellow. After UV-C radiation for 72 hours, with measuring L*a*b* in Gf acid-alkaline dyeing hair while the redness and yellowness is getting lower as the lightness lower, the color of yellow was more vivid because of the yellowness taking a share of 80%. After UV-C radiation for 72 hours, the thickness of Gf acid-alkaline dyeing hair and henna dyeing hair are thicker than oxidized colorants hair and bleached hair. The thickness of Gf acid-alkaline dyeing hair and henna dyeing hair had more tensile strength than oxidized colorants hair and bleached hair after UV-C radiation for 72 hours over immediately after dyeing. Whereas Gf dyeing hair had lower photo stability than oxidized colorants hair had, it had less than henna dyeing hair, and the hair demage of Gf dyeing hair was much less severe. In conclusion,Gf may be useful for hair bleaching and coating in young people and children.
