The current study examined the L2 article use in thirty-six adult L1-Korean L2-English learners from article-less language background in the two semantic contexts, [+definite, -specific] and [-definite, +specific]. Furthermore, the effects of L2 language proficiency on L2 article production were also explored. The participants were assessed on a cloze test with respect to their grammatical ability as well as a picture description test in terms of L2-English article elicitation. The results uncovered that overall, regardless of their grammatical ability, L1-Korean L2-English learners tend to overuse the in [-definite, +specific] and a in [+definite, -specific] contexts. In addition, L2 high grammatical ability group outperformed L2 low grammatical group on L2 article production in both definite and indefinite contexts. The results suggest that unfamiliar L2-English article-embedded noun phrases (NPs) in the two semantic contexts are highly abstruse to L2 learners and consequently L2 learners generally fluctuate in choosing accurate article in those two contexts. The findings also propose that L2 high grammatical ability is likely to help L2 learners efficiently filter out what to transfer their L1 NP knowledge to L2 NP and what not and therefore, the transferability of L1 NP to L2 NP may play a crucial role in article choice variability.
