Given the assertion of a group of researchers (Biber & Reppen 2002, O’Keeffe, McCarthy & Carter 2007), this study investigates to see if there is any discrepancy in usages of near synonyms roughly and approximately between authentic data and English teaching materials. Within the corpus-based approach, we analyze the target words in terms of frequency, collocation and colligation patterns by exploiting a representative sample of BNC and Brown Corpus. Based on the result, usages of target words in bilingual dictionaries and high school English textbook corpus is compared with that of real data. This discrepancy suggests that English dictionaries and textbooks should be modified to better reflect the dynamism of the English language features in order to aid students in acquiring native-like fluency.
