The objective of this investigation was to describe the phonological system of Intha as it is spoken at Inle Lake, in the Nyaung Shwe Township of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, by using the Phonemics Theory.
The results from the data analysis revealed that there are 26 consonant phonemes: /p, ph, m, hm, w, hw, t, th, s, sh, n, hn, l, hl, r, c, ch, y, ɲ, hɲ, k, kh, ŋ, hŋ, ʔ, h/; three consonant cluster phonemes: /-r, -y, -w/; eight oral vowel phonemes: /i, e, ɛ, a, u, o, ɔ, ai/; seven nasal vowel phonemes: /ĩ, ẽ, ɛ̃, ã, ũ, õ, ɔ̃/; and four tones, /1, 2, 3, 4/, phonemically described as low-falling tone, low-rising-falling tone, mid-rising-falling, and high-falling tone.
