The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of teaching studentstaking a bilingual-based holistic approach using TV broadcast news withthe focus on acquiring collocations. This was done by instructing 61junior university students majoring in English language and literature. Apretest was administered requiring students to translate Koreancollocational phrases within English sentences. This identical posttestwas conducted after a one and a half month period. The results, analyzedbased on low-level and high-level students, are as follows: Both groupsperformed much better after the experiment and the results werestatistically significant. What’s noteworthy was that there was a biggerincrease in scores among the low-level group. There was not a significantcorrelation between TOEIC scores and the posttest scores. This presentstudy suggests that the ‘general approach’ to English learning combiningbilingual methods and TV news is conducive to nurturing the acquisitionof collocations and eventually communicative competence.
