In 2012, Indonesia commenced the Congress of the Indonesian Diaspora to establish linkages with its diaspora and to possibly channel their potentials for Indonesia’s development. However, there has yet to be a clear mechanism for diaspora engagement other than the establishment of a diaspora organization along with its globally spread branches. Korea is a country that has long been home to the Indonesian diaspora, and the population of the Indonesian diaspora in Korea continues to increase as Korea continues to open its doors in attracting immigrants as human capital. The author argues that there needs to be acknowledgement on the importance of the estimated 35,000 Indonesian diaspora in Korea as they bestow significant contributions in terms of – among many things – remittance and human capital. The research then proposes policy recommendations that aim to mobilize Indonesian development actors, mainly the government, the industrial/private sector, and the academic sector, in creating a conducive framework to effectively channel the economic and human capital potentials from the Indonesian diaspora in Korea.
