This paper explores the issue of food security in Indonesia. In the post‐Suharto era, food security has been one of crucial issues in the Indonesian political economy because the situation of food supply and the level of food prices in Indonesia have been deteriorated. The Indonesian governments have been struggling to achieve a self‐sufficiency on food but the situation is getting worse after the Asian economic crisis in 1997‐1998. The adoption of the IMF’s structure adjustment policies (SAPs) and the implementation of liberalization have contributed to seriously weaken the state’s role in the agriculture sector. As a result of these policies, Indonesia became a net food importing country and the lives of the Indonesian people became worse due to the rise of food prices. This government policy is not acceptable for the Indonesian people. A strong political pressure is needed to reverse the government‘s policy regarding agriculture sector. In other words, the Indonesian people strongly call for a policy that disregards liberalization and the IMF’s SAPs because the government’s strong intervention on agricultural sector is very important in realizing a self‐reliance and food security.
