Musical modernity of Korea, China, and Japan is closely interconnected with its political and socio-cultural circumstances, particularly colonialism and the introduction of Christianity. The two common threads have formed shared experiences, exerting a great impact on the lives of people and musical activities equally in the region to form a group identity during the modernization process. In fact, a vast array of primary sources of the modern time (from the end of the 19th C. to 1945) such as songs and hymns reveal common provenances and attributes in their repertoires far beyond the region to Europe and the United States. In this paper, I will discuss the close cultural connection evident in collected materials with a specific song as an example and the reasons for establishing a new database system that is appropriate for documenting primary sources of East Asia.
