This study examines lexical changes in 1930s Korean with Samcheolli Corpus (1929-42), focusing on the words in synonymous relations. There was a sudden emergence of new words in late 19th and early 20th century Korea as the traditional society went through rapid shifts which can be summarized as modernization. Some words were coined and some words were adopted from foreign language. The advent of this neologism initiates the lexical system changes as it competes with other words which have a similar meaning. We explore this synonymous competence in terms of meaning and distribution. Chapter 3 discusses the relations between the existing word sijeol and newly adopted word from Japanese, sidae and how sidae intruded the meaning of sijeol and settled down in Korean lexical system. Chapter 4 explored newly coined words ttaemun and kkadak. These two words emerged at the same period and shared their distributions. However, ttaemun and kkadak reestablished their relations in terms of distribution while they share the same meaning.
