The followers of both Martin Luther(1483-1546) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) have perceived them as rivals to each other until recent times. Though contemporaries, they did not meet each other nor did one write anything against the other. When we examine their writings of spiritual nature there emerge some core similarities in their thought. When we trace its development, we discover that it springs from a similar socio–religious context and from common spiritual sources available to both. Moreover, Luther and Loyola’s spiritual itineraries have much in common. Their spiritual quest led them to seek first hand experiential knowledge of the Saviour Christ. Their spiritualities are dynamic because they are characterised by a set of creative tensions. As we commemorate the Reformation, a study of this nature helps us to look at the conflictual past differently and paves way for a future towards greater communion between Lutherans and Catholics.
