The Catholic Church celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council, which in its 16 documents has given a new theological and pastoral orientation. This article seeks to expound some turning points of this great event. In the words of Karl Rahner, the Council of about 3,000 bishops from around the world was in itself the first self-realization of the Church as the Universal Church. Furthermore, the Council defined itself as a “pastoral council”. According to the principle of pastorality, it undertook an interpretation of the Christian faith in the context of modernity. This Pastorality shows up in the formal composition of the documents ad intra which emphasize the participation of all the members of the people of God, and of the documents ad extra which recognize the cultural and religious otherness. As far as the content is concerned, the Council does take up the important contemporary challenges such as the questions of material poverty and religious freedom and the respective responses of the Church.
