The purpose of this paper is to clarify how Japanese expatriate wives develop a new set of childcare networks in Shanghai, China. Based on semi-structured interviews with 13 Japanese wives living in Japanese furnished apartments in Shanghai, the results showed that these wives found it critically important to have contact with as many as possible of the Japanese wives living in the same apartment and having children go to the same school because they were able to share local child-rearing information. This study also revealed that their reliable local friends provided the interviewed wives with immediate and emotional support in child-rearing. When they chose reliable friends and organized their new childcare networks, their children’s age, sex and brotherhood were determining factors. And their background, lifestyle and child discipline were also significant factors. Furthermore, this study suggested that the wives’ relation to the earlier childcare network changed as being away from home. The results were discussed in details in consideration of previous studies, and implications for future research were addressed.
