This paper examines a case of sustainable agriculture development in Northeast Thailand and aims to understand what kind of systems that cut costs and promote wide recognition are needed in order to change farming methods. In Thailand, a sustainable agriculture policy was adopted after the concept of "sustainable agriculture" in the 8th National Economic and Social Development Plan. The government of Thailand adopted the philosophy of the "sufficiency economy" at the national level after 1997, which was the year of the Asian financial crisis, and promoted sustainable agriculture throughout its 9th and 10th plans. According to the report by the NESDB, integrated agriculture is the most prevalent method of farming among the different kinds of sustainable agriculture used by Thai farmers. Integrated agriculture may contribute to the household food security and the balance of household income and expenditure. However, it is difficult for small farmers to introduce a new method of farming if the cost of change is high. There are difficulties in the transition from one type of farming to another. This paper examines the reasons given by farmers who changed their farming methods, and focuses on community groups as the main cost-cutter. In order to promote a greater understanding of the strategies used by farmers' households and communities, it is important to have a depth of knowledge about sustainable agriculture as it is practiced by various actors in villages.
