The water nomads who lived in China have, since the 1960s, received occupancies in collective apartments and come to live on land. This research looks at the example of families among the water nomads who had long been living in houseboats on the Jiulong-jiang River in southern Fujian Province in China who continue to follow that lifestyle and consider what kind of social relationships make this lifestyle possible, focusing on the family and clan networks for child rearing. When one looks at the practice of child rearing, it is apparent that it would not be possible without a wide clan network on the land on both paternal and maternal sides. In their case, relationships with in-laws who originally had only a courteous meaning play as important a role in daily lives as those with relatives directly tied by blood. Family and clan relationships provide the potential for this lifestyle, while each family group maintains loose mutual boundaries, and are therefore extremely important for the water nomads to continue to live on water.
