Tradition of fantasy comes down long time with myth and folklore. At this time fantasy of children’s literature inherit this tradition through romantism. Fantasy of children’s literature gives chance to satisfy desires in the depth of human and to recover from emotional injury. Fantasy of children’s literature plays an important part in mental growth and maturity of children’s. Never Ending Story and Youngmo Disappeared have similar with folklore structure and stereotyped hero. In the two works exist together reality and fantasy and describe change of heroes through experience fantasy’s world. Two works give emphasis to set up a relationship with parents and appreciate a own real worth. It is a result of adventure and suffering in the fantasy’s world. At the cost of adventure and suffering heroes understand a real true that the most important thing in life certainly realizes who I am and becomes aware of love to self, parents. The power to come back to real world from fantasy world is awakening of heroes. It is a hide love to self, parents and friendship, which they can not recognize in the real world. Space of fantasy gives time to awake of ability to meet face to face with real world and self, to gain of new opinion and to recover from internal injury. So fantasy of children's literature has magic power to have the courage to face up to the reality and to take a new view of reality.

오랜 세월 신화와 민담을 통해 내려온 판타지 전통은 낭만주의에 이어 오늘날 판타지 아동문학을 통해 이어지고 있다. 판타지 아동문학은 인간 속에 내재된 은밀한 욕망을 해소하고 치유할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점에서 아이들의 정신적 성장과 성숙에 중요한 기능을 수행하고 있다. 󰡔끝없는 이야기󰡕와 󰡔영모가 사라졌다󰡕는 민담과 비슷한 구조와 전형적인 주인공을 등장시키며, 현실과 판타지의 공존 및 판타지세계의 경험을 통해 주인공들이 변화되는 과정을 그리고 있다. 두 작품은 단절된 부모와의 관계를 다시 정립하며, 현재 자신의 모습을 인정하게 되는 과정을 강조하는데, 이는 주인공 바스티안과 영모가 판타지세계를 여행하면서 많은 것들을 모험하고 경험한 뒤에 깨닫게 되는 중요한 진실이었다. 인생에서 가장 소중한 것은 내가 누구라는 것을 아는 것이고, 그것은 바로 사랑을 통해서 구현된다는 사실은 주인공들이 시련과 모험을 통해서만 깨달을 수 있는 값비싼 진실이었다. 주인공들이 판타지세계를 떠나 현실로 다시 돌아올 수 있었던 힘은 욕망을 충족한 뒤에 느낀 깨달음에 의한 것이다. 그것은 바로 자신이 미처 깨닫지 못했던 내면속에 숨겨진 자신에 대한 사랑, 아버지에 대한 사랑이었고, 친구의 우정이었다. 판타지공간은 주인공들의 현실대처 능력과 새로운 시각, 자존감과 사랑을 일깨워주는 각성과 성숙의 시간이었으며, 나약하고 소심한 주인공의 자아 찾기, 재탄생 및 상처치유에 필요한 성장의 공간이었다. 이처럼 판타지 아동문학이란 나약한 현실의 주인공들이 현실을 직시하고 대면할 수 있도록 만들며, 현실을 새롭게 바라볼 수 있도록 만드는 마법 같은 힘을 갖고 있는 것이다.
