Matteo Ricci’s The Western Art of Memory(西國記法) is an attempt to apply the Western art of memory to Chinese characters and texts. In this book Ricci introduced the principles of the art of memory for the first time to China, as well as a variety of ways of remembering Chinese texts,based on his unique understanding of Chinese characters. This paper aims mainly to survey the important points of this book that has been little studied until now. For this purpose, we outline at first the structure and principles of the Western art of memory and show how Ricci applied it to Chinese contexts. Unlike the other books written by Ricci, the influence of this book on Chinese people was almost negligible. But here we can observe the way in which a 16th century European intellectual understood and appropriated the Chinese knowledge system. This is one of the important issues that arose as the different cultures of Europe and China came into contact.
