There are two topics discussed in this paper, the objective of which is an observation on the Korean shamanic ritual called ‘gut’. One concerns a methodological problem of how to give it a semiotic description and the other an epistemological one in understanding, within the framework of French conceptual mapping, the conditions necessary for a shaman to successfully perform a ritual cure. We begin by explaining in semantico-syntactic words the principles of organization of a shamanic ritual called ‘Chunsingut’. We introduce then the thoughts of French contemporary theorists such as Claude Levi-Strauss, Michael Foucault etc.
This enables us, on one hand to discuss the etyology and mechanism of ritual cure, and on the other hand to clarify what characterizes the Korean shamanic cure compared with that of modern medical science.
