The national defense budget reflects requirements of military readiness, which should be affected and determined by recent changing geo-political environment around the Peninsular. In this respect, now is the time to reevaluate the appropriate weight of the national defense budget in terms of GDP. However, the defense budget issue has still been neglected, despite the fact that the national security is the most essential welfare benefits.
This paper examines the current status of the national defense budget, suggests the reasons why this is the right time for us to reevaluate the weight of the national defense budget, and provides major policy directions for the reevaluation at a conceptual level.
