Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nursing intervention program with 41 written cards and reinforced communication nursing protocol methods on the communication improvement for the endotracheal intubated patients. Method: Thirty eight patients having endotracheal intubation in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in Gwangju city were participated and they were divided into two groups; 21 for control and 17 for experimental group. Forty-one reading cards including the physical, emotional, and psychological needs were used. In addition, eight basic nursing cares were provided simultaneously with explanation of the care procedures. Data were collected from May to October, 2006 using Likert scale questionnaires with items regarding communication efficacy, communication difficulties and satisfaction on the nursing care services. Results: Experimental group was showed higher score of communication efficacy and lower difficulties in communication than those of control group. Furthermore, Higher score in satisfaction with basic nursing cares was showed in the experimental group. Conclusion: The results suggest that nursing intervention methods could be utilized as an effective of nursing strategies in order to improve the communication for the patients having endotracheal intubation.
