The purpose of this study is to examine learners’ misconceptions about ‘free’ and ‘bound’ morpheme and to propose an educational direction. Learners’ misconceptions such as “wrongly associating free morpheme with the ability to form sentences” and “confusing the morphological level with the syntactical level” were identified, and it was discovered that these misconceptions exhibit a multilayered structure.
Based on this analysis, the study points out that free and bound morpheme have to be dealt with not as subtypes of morpheme, but as concepts used at the process of constructing the concept of morpheme and that activities of passing through morphological level with syntactical level can deepen and expend learners’ language awareness. This study defines learners’ misconceptions as a starting point of inquiry and as a ground for scaffolding and proposes a process for teaching and learning.
