This article aims to find an effective method for building elementary school students' lexical competence in Korean language class based on Workshop model. First, this study suggests natures and perspectives of vocabulary instruction in elementary school. In terms of the nature, specifically in the aspect of learner, the students are under the circumstance of learning their mother tongue. They are also in the process of dramatic improvement in their lexical competences. When it comes to the educational contents, the contents for teaching vocabularies presented in the textbook are not balanced well. Therefore, in consideration of those natures of current vocabulary instruction in Korean elementary school, this paper suggests three perspectives for teaching vocabularies in elementary school. Vocabulary instruction in elementary school should 1) be able to consistently draw learners' attention, 2) help learners with their independent learning, and 3) be conducted in supportive atmosphere. Second, this study suggests the principles of using Workshop model in vocabulary instruction. 1) Consideration of the balance in knowledge, skill, and attitude. 2) Consideration of the integration of the five domains of Korean language curriculum, which are listening and speaking, reading, writing, grammar and literature. Third, this study presents the specific procedure of Workshop model as well as it shows how this model can be applied to the vocabulary contents of the textbook. The educational implication of the Workshop model applied to the vocabulary instruction is that it facilitates learners' interactive discussion and makes vocabulary learning more authentic and meaningful.
