Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare neonatal perception and attachment behaviors between mothers of normal infants and mothers of preterm infants, and to provide some fundamental measures for improving attachment behaviors among them. Methods: This study used a descriptive research design. The participants were 31 normal infants' mothers, and 28 preterm infants' mothers from hospitals K university in Seoul. Data were collected from Aug, 2006 to Dec 2006. Neonatal perception assessment tools, developed by Broussard(1979) and amended by Lee Ja-hyoung(1986), was utilized. For the study of the neonatal attachment behavior of mothers, the observation checklist of the attachment behavior of mothers of premature babies by Tilokskulchai et al.(2002) was used. Results: In the neonatal perception, there was no significant difference between these two groups, which were the mothers of normal infants and the mothers of preterm infants. With regard to attachment behavior, mothers of preterm infants showed more negative and passive behaviors than those of the mothers of normal infant. Conclusion: Mothers of preterm infants exhibite passive touch pattern when they first met their infants at NICU.
