Purpose: This methodological study was designed to develop the Pressure Ulcer Predicting Scale(PUPS) for patients with neurologic condition and to ascertain its predictive validity. Methods: The preliminary items of PUPS were developed from reviewing the related literature and identifying the pressure ulcer risk factors from eleven neurosurgery patients with pressure ulceration and twenty-two patients free of pressure ulceration. The seventy-three neurosurgery patients for measuring the predictive validity of the PUPS were sampled from K hospital. Result: The prevalence of pressure ulcer was 8.2%. The significant predictors for pressure ulcer lesions were mental condition, nutritional state, sensory perception, moisture, activity, mobility, friction and shear. The cutoff point was 19 for the performance standard of 100% sensitivity, 94% specificity, 60% positive predictive value, and 100% negative predictive value. Conclusion: The finding suggests that the PUPS has a good predict value, high sensitivity, and high specificity being able to predict which neurosurgery patients are at risk for pressure ulcer. Accordingly, the PUPS may be more appropriate for application in patients with neurologic condition.
