One of the contents of Korean grammar education in the elementary level that have continuously appeared from the first Korean national curriculum to the 2009 revised Korean national curriculum is sentence types. They encompass subordinating categories which include declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, imperative sentences, exclamatory sentences, suggesting sentences, and so on.
This article examines the contents of the Korean national curriculum regarding the sentence types that appeared from the first Korean national curriculum to the 2009 revised Korean national curriculum and also analyzes the activities included in textbooks, in order to investigate the changes in the contents indicated in curriculum and their manifestation at textbooks. Moreover, this article inquires into the nature of teaching the sentence types by exploring the features of each curriculum and examining whether the contents of curriculum and textbooks correspond to the features and objectives of grammar education; afterwards, points to be improved are drawn.
