In the globalized era, Korean contemporary music requires approaches moving beyond the discourses searching for cultural identity such as Korean-ness or national tradition, prevailing in the past few decades. This paper suggests the new paradigm for evaluating diverse musical attempts during the changing process of Korean contemporary music since the late 1990s. To that end, the old issues such as ‘modernity’ and ‘tradition’ need to be reinterpreted in the discourse of glocalization and interculturality; furthermore, the concepts of ‘multiple/flexible identities’ or ‘transcultural imagination’ are discussed for remapping the various practices, ranging from experiments combining Western musical idioms with the traditional Korean one to sound art or intermedia work exerted outside ‘so-called’ classical music scene.
