The most fundamental reason for much of the difficulty in specific and integrated approaches to the modern music of East Asia since the introduction of western music is because an archive and a database of primary sources of East Asian music were not established properly until now. The Ewha Music Research Institute (EMRI) which represents East Asia region as one of the working groups of the RISM (the Répertoire Internationale des Sources Musicale) organization started the project “Establishing a Music Education Database of Modern East Asian Music,” funded by the National Research Foundation Korea in November 2011. The project aims to build a database and system for music education materials in East Asia, which can provide a solid foundation for cultural as well as a historical study of music in the modern era as a first step. With cataloged information on East Asian music from primary sources, the database, EMDB (Ewha Music Database) provides user friendly search functions. Users can view and compare information such as books, collections and scores used for music education in Korea, China and Japan in one place. It shows the new possibility of research on East Asian music through the database and signifies the beginning of such research.
