A Study on the Scat Syllable's using methodHyunseung BangThis thesis is written as a result of study about Scat Syllable. For this study, I chose three songs and analyzed them to observed usage of scat syllable. The three songs, I chose for my study are Good Ol' lady, sung by Jon Hendricks in 1995, Cloudburst, sung by Kevin Mahogany in 1997, and Close Your Eyes, sung by Kurt Elling in 1995. The reason why I chose these songs as subject of my study is these three vocalists are evaluated as people who have made significant contribution to jazz vocal improvisation.As a result of analysis of scat syllable's usage, I could find the following facts. First, Scat syllable is influence by instrumental improvisation's sound and technique. Second, Specially, scat syllable is huge influence by wind instrumental improvisation's sound and technique. Third, Scat syllable is used by some kind of formula, and there are some scat syllables used mostly by three vocalists. Fourth, All of three vocalists use general scat syllable to sing, but they give personal color to their solo by using scat syllable differently. Fifth, Jon Hendricks and Kevin mahogany have similar propensity to use scat syllable, but Kurt Elling uses different method to express scat syllable.And as a result of more consideration, I could find that scat syllable can be expressed into varied shape accordance with different syllable's using method and has infinite possibility depends upon one's effort to find creative syllable.
