Although recalling or looking back at past time is not only an academic category but a category of universal human behavior, since the turn of the 21st century, so-called retro tendencies have been more intense than ever. Despite the constant warnings that retro, perfume, past, and old-fashioned phenomena are only temporary fads, over the past twenty years, retro has been one of the key words of Korean popular culture and has been transforming itself continuously through this period. Now, even in the media, such as movies, dramas, TV programs, performances, festivals, and various cultural spaces, retro has become a solid area beyond simple fashion. In Korean popular culture, the flow of retro has had a long and lasting influence, and popular music plays a key role in this retrograde trend. The intensity and magnitude of the emotional impact that is transmitted through music function not only when it is individual music itself, but also important in other forms of media, such as movies and dramas - even overwhelming narrative structures and actors to be. Indeed, today's culture has been addicted to the past, which means it is regressive and regressive? Is it the inevitable departure of the current present in the dead end, the present without the future? Is there no newness to pop music, is there no further progress or innovation? In spite of all these doubts about past-oriented retro, why we are attracted to the message they throw? Is this a romantic and emotional painkiller for the current anxiety, loss and deprivation, and a strategy for the cultural industry to sell even emotions? In order to reach these problems, this paper attempts to describe the meaning of retro as the Off-Modern, as well as the characteristics of retro as media symbols that are reflected by the coexistence and conflict of medial biases.
