We human have been trying to overcome or extinct suffering in a lot of fields. Religion may be called the climax of struggle with the suffering of life. Religion is defined to overcome, through change of human himself(or herself) and the world, the realities of suffering that would not leave us alone. If the duty of religion is to recognize suffering and to try to extinct it, the goal of religion is happiness, that is, salvation which is to be gained though overcoming it. Then how is salvation brought forth in religion? The process and method would not be one. Each religion has her own viewpoint and methodology. Compassion in the early Buddhism and agape in the Christianity have close connections respectively with their own viewpoints of salvation. In spite of essential incompatibility of two concepts, which is brought about owing to the role of God, the teachings of love by two religions prove that religion has compassionateness. There is found the compatibility of two concepts in compassionateness of religion. It has been longtime since two religions had taught the universality of love, that is, compassion and agape through their own history and tradition. People, touched by those teachings, have experienced salvation and spreading their experience have invited other people. Compassionate ones of two religions have thus appeared in the world. If religion has a portion to contribute to the society, it is that religious people themselves get compassionate by the teachings and ascetic practices of each religion and lead others toward the cultivation of compassion. Here is the reason why compassion and agape takes important part in the dialogue and cooperation between Buddhism and Christianity.
