In diachronic terms, “Romantizam (Romanticism)” is regarded as a literary age that constitutes a center of modern literature after the literature of the Middle Ages and is characterized by the transitional period preparing for contemporary literature (modernism and all the follow-up literary trends). In the literary age, efforts are made to get over not only the influences the universal religions of the Middle Ages has had on literature and the feudal system that has functioned as a structural framework in political, economic and social terms, but also the existing literary biases mainly in the cities that are newly being formed. In literary terms, the efforts are led by the writers and their works of literary Romanticism. For the Serbian people, "the Romantic literature" means the efforts not merely to escape from the existing stereotyped literary limitations in terms of form and content, but also to incorporate the folklore and oral literature of the Serbian people into literary works and to literarily reveal their efforts for restoring the identity of the Serbians as a conquered nation. Therefore, it can be evaluated to contain all the characteristics other conquered nations show in their romantic literary works. Specifically, this study looks into the general and individual characteristics of the Serbian Romantic literature through the poetic works of Branko Radičević, Đura Jakšić, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj and Laza Kostić that represented the Serbian literature from the early 19th century in which the Romantic literature began to be in full bloom till the early 20th century in which the tendencies of modernism began to appear.
