This study discusses the poetics of the Russian symbolist's novel, especially the poetics of myth and the use of symbols. In the epoch of transition, Russia experienced the collapse of traditional values and the emergence of a new way of looking at the world. Russian symbolism originated from the quest for a new literary form reflecting the notion of modernism. Most of the famous modernist movements in Russia are associated with symbolism. Russian symbolists were concerned about how to represent the new realities of the world. These new realities came about as they tried to understand the rapid changes in the world during the early twentieth century. During that era, revolutionary discoveries in the fields of science and philosophy changed the way people perceived the world. They no longer approached the world in the old manner but with a sense of urgency which was reflected in the new literary form developed by Russian symbolists. The most important literary devices for Russian symbolists are the use of symbols and the poetics of myth. Russian symbolists understood that the early twentieth century was the period of fragmentation and instability and they tried to reclaim a sense of certainty. In this respect, their use of the poetics of myth is an attempt to recover the lost unity of humanity because in the understanding of Russian symbolism, a myth can show general principles in the world and provide the truth that underlies concrete historical reality.
