This study was conducted to compare the behavior of total organic carbon among biological sewage treatmentprocesses and analyze correlations between organic matters in the influent and effluent of sewage treatmentplants (STP). Target STPs selected for this study were four plants where representative processes wereapplied according to the processing system. The treatment processes used in these plants included 4-stage biologicalnutrient removal (4-stage BNR), bio ceramic sequencing batch reactor (BCS), denitrification and phosphorusremoval (DeNiPho), and membrane bio-reactor (MBR). The TOC removal rates of the four plantsaveraged 86.9%, lower than their COD and BOD removal efficiencies, but the TOC concentrations in theireffluent were steady (no higher than 10 mg/L). In the simple correlation analysis, TOC showed the highest correlationswith SBOD 5 (r=0.989) and TCOD Mn (r=0.971) in the influent and with SCOD Mn (r=0.996) in the effluent,which indicates that TOC can replace COD as an organic indicator. According to the principal componentanalysis (PCA), three components were extracted from PCA A between organic matters in the influent andeffluent. For the influent, the analysis result showed that the first component had high positive correlations withTOC, DOC, TCOD Cr , SCOD Cr , TBOD 5 , and SBOD 5 . Its variance was 59.1% among all principal components(PCs). The PCA of the effluent suggested that PC 1, PC 2 and PC 3 accounted for 44%, 35% and 21% of thetotal variances, respectively. The first component had high positive correlations with POC, TSS, VSS, T-N, and sT-N.
