In this study, the characteristics of PAHs deposited on pine needles and soil, which were used as a passive sampler of atmospheric POPs, and collected at rural and urban areas were investigated. Concentrations of PAHs with lower molecular weights mainly gaseous state in atmosphere were high in pine needles, but those with higher molecular weight remain mainly particulate state in ambient air were low. However, PAHs of lower and higher molecular weights were high in soil; those of higher molecular weights were relatively higher. Correlation between PAHs concentrations in pine needle and those in soil at rural and urban areas were high (R2=0.9743, p<0.001 and R2=0.7998, p<0.001 respectively). But correlation between PAHs concentrations of pine needles and soil at rural or urban area were low. Therefore young pine needles is better as a passive sampler of atmospheric PAHs for short monitoring period, but soil is better for long monitoring period.
