This study was carried out to find the depositional characteristics of several tree leaves [Pine needles (Pinusdensiflora), Kalopanax (Kalopanax pictus Thunb.), Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and Quince (Chaenomeles sinensis)],which are used as passive air sampler (PAS) of atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Tree leaves were sampled from the same places and PBDEs were analyzed by HRGC/HRMS. Ginkgo leavescontained the highest lipid content (5.11 mg/g dry), whereas Quince (4.65 mg/g dry), Kalopanax (3.56 mg/gdry), and Pine needles (2.61 mg/g dry) contained less. The total PBDEs (IUPAC No. BDE-17, 28, 47, 49, 66,71, 77, 85, 99, 100, 119, 126, 138, 153, 154, 156, 183, 184, 191, 196, 197, 206, 207, 209) concentrations werethe highest in Quince leaves contained 9,369.4 pg/g dry, the followed by Ginkgo (6,178.9 pg/g dry), Kalopanax4,912.6 pg/g dry) and Pine needles (2,130.4 pg/g dry). But distribution profiles of PBDE congeners were similareach other. The dominant PBDE congeners were BDE-47, 99, 206, 207 and 209. Higher substituted PBDEsparticularly, BDE-206, 207 and 209 were the main congeners and accounted for 76.4% (69.0~82.0%) of thetotal PBDEs. Highly significant correlations (r=0.9335 p=0.0665) were found between lower substitutedPBDEs (tri- through hepta-BDEs) concentrations and the lipid contents in tree leaves. But it showed low correlations(r=0.7487, p=0.2552) between higher substituted PBDEs (octa- through deca-BDEs) concentrationsand the lipid contents in tree leaves.
